Cigar Reviews

Brand:
Amante by Tinderbox.com
Comments:
I had an opportunity to sample an excellent cigar from Tinderbox.com this past weekendthe Amante Natural Churchill. Many of you are already familiar with Tinder Box, a leading seller of premium cigars, pipes, and tobacco accessories since 1928. The good folks at Tinder Box searched far and wide to find a cigar they could offer their loyal customers that offers exceptional quality construction with rich flavorful taste at a fair price. They knocked the ball off the cover with their Amante brand, which offers consumers the choice of 6 different Cuban seed sizes-- Robusto, Corona, Torpedo, Churchill, Presidente, and Toro-- with either Connecticut Shade Grown or Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. Amante cigars are hand made in Florida with tobacco from 3 countries: Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. Each cigar is rolled by Senor Bonilla, a true artist who came to Tinderbox.com from Cuba where he was a level 7 roller (the highest rank available for a roller) at the world famous Partagas Factory in Havana. The Churchill I smoked had an excellent draw with nice, smooth body and a strength that is best described as mild to medium, making it the perfect anytime of day or evening cigar. For those preferring a fuller flavored cigar, the Amante Toro Maduro or Torpedo Maduro would be an excellent choice. All Amante cigars are available in either bundles of 20 or 5 packs. Whatever you decide, please keep in mind demand for these exceptionally delicious cigars are sure to sell quickly so we encourage you to visit our friends at Tinderbox.com  for further product and purchasing information.

Badge of Honor by Kiki Berger
Comments:
In the aftermath of September 11, there have been numerous ways for Americans to express their patriotism and to show their support and appreciation for the outstanding job currently being performed by each and every member of our Armed Forces. The Corona Cigar Company has teamed up with Kiki Berger to produce a line of cigars that honors the men and women of  uniform by creating a new brand of cigars appropriately named "Badge of  Honor". These Churchill sized cigars are hand-made in Esteli, Nicaragua and are comprised of a mild blend of Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobaccos and a medium-brown Indonesian wrapper. The cigars come packaged in a beautiful
cedar box of 25 that also proudly displays the logo of the military branch of  your choosing; Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Army National Guard. The cigars are great tasting, are a wonderful way to pay tribute to our soldiers, and a portion of all proceeds go to the American Red Cross. Delivery is also possible to all US military bases. Cielo by Corona Cigar Company
Comments:
In recent years, one of the more notable trends within the cigar industry has been the introduction of cigars produced with vintage sun grown wrappers. This has been in response to the demands of cigar smokers whose personal tastes have matured and now seek that richer, medium to full bodied flavor. The Corona Cigar Company has teamed up with Tabacalera Perdomo to produce their excellent new line of award-winning cigars that competes head to head with the world's best, super-premium cigars, Cielo--"the cigar of the gods." Handcrafted and manufactured in Esteli, Nicaragua the Cielo brand of cigars is available in 5 different sizes containing 20 cigars each per box as well as a smaller sized sampler pack that contains one each of the various sizes. Each box is aged and matured a minimum of 6 months and provides a flavor and smoking sensation that rivals their Cuban counterparts. The only difference between Cielo and other brands is that Cielo will not burn a hole in your wallet. Don't take our word for it.....see for yourselves, by contacting the good folks at Corona Cigar Company--voted one of the "Best of the Web" online cigar stores by Forbes.com magazine.

V Centennial
Comments:
I had an opportunity to sample a V Centennial cigar the other day, one of the many outstanding and highly rated cigars from Tropical Tobacco, Inc. Within the V Centennial line there are 10 sizes to chose from, including your choice of natural or maduro wrapper for selected sizes. Given my personal preference towards fuller flavored cigars, I selected the Cetro maduro. Upon first glance, one notices a beautifully wrapped, well constructed cigar that has an exceptional pre-smoke aroma. From the moment I lit the cigar, I could tell this was a classic that is very reminiscent of benchmark Cuban cigars from years past. The cigar had a certain spicy, yet smooth, flavor that remained consistent throughout and it burned evenlyanother sign of a well produced cigar. If  your search for a full flavored cigar  has been unsuccessful recently, search no furtherthe V Centennial from Tropical Tobacco is destined to satisfy the most discriminating connoisseur at an affordable price. You will see why Cigar Aficionado Magazine recently rated this cigar a very respectable 89.

Comments:
In Cuba, Isaac Delgado is affectionately referred to as El Chevere. Translated into English, this means the smooth one in reference to his legendary music abilities. Perhaps Pedro Martin, legendary founder of Tropical Tobacco, Inc., could also be called El Chevere in reference to the smooth line of Cacique cigars he has been producing since 1978. Cacique cigars are handmade in the Dominican Republic and blended with Dominican Havana seed Ligero and Seco. This combination of fine tobacco gives Cacique a full tobacco flavor yet it is mild  to medium in flavorthe perfect  cigar for anytime, day or night. Cacique is available in 10 different sizes, some of which are also available in a maduro version.  Their torpedo ( 6 x 52) has been rated by Insider Magazine with 90 points.   For additional information on this cigar and others, please contact our good friends from Tropical Tobacco by visiting their web site or by calling their toll free 1-800-826-7930 numbertell them CigarFriendly.com sent you.

Comments:
If you ask a baseball fan who is the best player ever to come from the Dominican Republic, chances are they will mention Pedro Martinez. While Pedro is certainly a great player, the truth is there have been many other excellent players as well, including Sammy Sosa and Juan Marichal. If you ask a cigar aficionado which is the best brand to come from the Dominican Republic, chances are they will mention Fuente. The fact is there are many other excellent brands as well, including Don Juan. The staff of CigarFriendly.com recently sampled a Don Juan Churchill and had a hard time distinguishing this cigar from its popular competitor noted above. Not only did this cigar exhibit a nice medium to full strength flavor, but it was consistent from beginning to end. Furthermore, the reasonable cost for this exceptional cigar will not burn a hole in your wallet either. If you are looking for a truly delicious cigar at a popular price point, the Don Juan Churchill is the cigar for you..we are not the only ones who feel this waythe folks at Cigar Aficionado Magazine rated this cigar a 90 in a recent tasting poll. Comments:
After a hard days work and a good, long workout there is nothing I enjoy more than sitting at my favorite coffee shop and having a rich cup of espresso with a good cigar just as the sun is setting. Time seems to stand still and all the problems that bothered me during the day have been put on hold, if only temporarily. The other night, I had the chance to sample a new brand, Maya, which is manufactured in Honduras and comes from the award-winning line of Tropical Tobacco Cigars. Nothing fancy, just a plain old-fashioned mild-to-medium flavored cigar that hit the spot. There are times when a good full flavored cigar appeals to mesuch as following a great steak dinner on the weekend which is usually accompanied by a bottle of wine. There are also those times, particularly during the week, when I need to be mentally prepared for the following day and prefer to have a milder cigar that will be gentler on my system, yet provide the same satisfying taste and relaxing experience that I have come to expect from all my cigars. Maya is the perfect choice for these occasions. It is available in 9 different sizes and has been rated with 88 points by Cigar Aficionado magazine. Comments:
Many cigar aficionados generally acknowledge that the two most difficult sizes of cigars to consistently and successfully roll are the Torpedo and Lancero.  This is why only the most skilled and experienced torcedors are chosen to produce such cigars.   Not only are there special intricacies involved in rolling these uniquely shaped cigars but it is necessary to pay extremely important attention to the amount of tobacco used in the production of these legendary shapes to make sure the end product is not underfilled or overfilled. The torcedors at Tropical Tobacco, under the veteran  guidance and leadership of  Pedro Martin have been successful in developing a Lancero cigar in their Lempira line that could bring a smile to the faces of Cohiba fanatics. Besides its outstanding flavor, the cigar was perfectly rolled and burned evenly throughout. Comments:
In 1997, the good folks at Tropical Tobacco consolidated their operations and  established their very own state-of-the-art cigar making facility in Santiago, Dominican Republic with the capacity to produce up to 20,000 cigars a day with 100 rollers. This centralized consolidation has allowed for greater efficiencies while maintaining the companys principle goalto provide consistent and great tasting cigars to its faithful customer base. One such great tasting cigar is the V Centennial 500. It is a vintage cigar that uses only the finest leaves from around the world to produce a full-bodied cigar with an abundance of flavor. Every feature of this extremely limited cigar is hand selected yearly, from the wrapper and binder to the filler. The Churchillpictured abovewas selected for our tasting purposes and provided an outstanding smoking experience. Due to its rich taste and full bodied flavor, this cigar is best smoked during the evening following a hearty meal when one wishes to unwind and spend some quality time with friends. This cigar features Cuban grown seed from Nicaragua that offers a medium to full-bodied flavor, yet maintains a creamy and smooth character. It is available in  5 different sizes at a very affordable price. For additional information on this cigar, please contact Tropical Tobacco Inc.

Intensa by Corona Cigar Company

Comments:
I am often asked by visitors to my site what non-Cuban cigar most resembles a Cuban Cigar at an affordable price....although there is no definitive answer, the Intensa line of cigars from the Corona Cigar Company comes awfully close. Their objective was to create an affordable, full-bodied cigar suited for the tastes of experienced cigar connoisseurs. To accomplish this, they selected Cuban-seed long filler tobacco grown in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. A wrapper from Sumatra was specially selected for its unique spicy flavor. After rolling, each cigar is box pressed in the true Cuban fashion. Then, each cigar is aged to perfection before being released for sale from the aging rooms. The Intensa line is available in 6 different sizes (Robusto, Corona, Corona Extra, Churchill, Double Corona, and Torpedo) ranging in price from $ 54.95 - $ 59.95 for a box of 20. A convenient sample pack containing each of the 6 different sizes is also available at an introductory price of only $ 19.95. So if you enjoy a cigar with a little "kick" but without the high price, look no further than the line of Intensa Cigars from the Corona Cigar Company.

Illusion by Olympic Cigars
Comments:
They say that variety is the spice of life... this certainly seems to be the case with cigars, as well. After smoking many similar tasting cigars (most of them Cuban) it is refreshing to sit down after dinner every once and a while and enjoy a good, flavored cigar - especially with or after desert. I had the pleasure of sampling a vanilla flavored cigar from the good folks at Olympic Cigars during a recent, long weekend and enjoyed the taste and aroma that came with their Illusion petite corona. (The Illusion is also available in chocolate flavor). There were several ladies present in the room who also appreciated this flavorful cigar and it was the perfect accompaniment to an excellent meal and good company. These cigars are manufactured in the Dominican Republic and are available in boxes of 25 for a very reasonable $90. Besides the petite corona, Olympic Cigars also offers larger sized versions (which also appeal to men) including their (1) Vision - a grand corona sized, vanilla flavored cigar, and (2) Mirage - a vanilla flavored, lonsdale sized cigar featuring a natural and maduro candy wrapper. For additional information on these outstanding tasting cigars - as well as other products - please be sure to contact Olympic Cigars at their toll free (888)546-2994 number of visit them on the web.

Corona Cigar Nicaraguan Selection
Comments:
I recently had a chance to sample a private label cigar from Corona Cigar Company-one of the leading and premier mail order cigar firms in the country. Corona Cigar Company wanted to wait for the right time to introduce a cigar bearing their company name. As you are aware, there were many private label brands introduced a few years back that failed to meet consumer expectations and are now off the market. Fortunately, the special Nicaraguan Selection offered by Corona Cigar Company features a blend of Cuban-seed tobacco grown in Panama with rich, natural Sumatra-seed wrappers that offer a nice medium-flavored smoke that is remarkably similar in taste and quality to another very popular brand, Padron. Corona Cigar Nicaraguan Selection is available in several sizes-including Torpedo, Robusto, Churchill, Double Corona, Corona Gorda, Corona Gigante, and Corona Extra-at an excellent price. In fact, if you act now you can take advantage of a special introductory offer in which they will include a free ceramic Corona Cigar Company ashtray when you purchase any two boxes. For a great tasting cigar at a great price from a reliable distributor, we highly recommend you give these new, excellent-tasting cigars a shot.

Maker's Mark Bourbon Seasoned Cigars
Comments:
I was searching for a special gift to buy for a friend who just celebrated his 40th Birthday and was having a difficult time deciding between a fine bottle of liquor or a box of cigars, when I stumbled across an ad in a back issue of Cigar Aficionado for Maker's Mark Bourbon Seasoned Cigars. I tried one of these great tasting cigars, myself, and my search was over. Maker's Mark Cigars are grown in the Dominican Republic from Cuban seed and are flavored with their famous bourbon. Each cigar is sealed in a glass tube to preserve their flavor and aroma. Perhaps, more importantly, Maker's Mark Cigars make excellent gifts because of the various packaging configurations offered. Specifically, you can choose from their "Vintage Havana Humidor" that contains 10 cigars packaged in a perfectly humidified acrylic jar or their handsome Three Gift Cigar Gift Box which comes packaged in a glossy black package with gold foil accents and a hinged front panel. You may also purchase one of the Resupply Boxes which contain 25 cigars. When you combine this packaging with a great tasting, flavored cigar you have the perfect gift for a friend--or why not treat yourself? Comments:
How many times have you finished a meal at a restaurant and started smoking a cigar when the person sitting at the table next to you has asked that you put it out?...How many times have you woken up the following morning with a lingering cigar aftertaste in your mouth?...If these situations sound all too familiar, then perhaps it is time you try one of the great tasting Rusty's Pipe Tobacco Cigars. Owner Russ Farrell found himself in such situations way too often and decided to do something about it by creating a cigar that combined the best of, both, the cigar and pipe smoking worlds. His cigars feature a unique international nougat blend of pipe tobacco with specially selected premium long filler tobacco that produces a smooth and mild tasting product with an attractive aroma. These uniquely, handcrafted cigars are available in three sizes (Toro, Robusto, and Corona) and come packaged in sampler packs or full boxes of 25. If you are truly looking for a great tasting cigar to smoke in public that you will enjoy--and, perhaps equally important, other people will not find offensive--then you owe it to yourself to try one of these beauties. Comments:
They say variety is the spice of life....that certainly seems to be the case with an outstanding line of cigars produced from the good folks at Casillas. As background, this brand was founded by Macario Casillas, a Cuban native who has been expertly rolling premium cigars for more than 40 years. There are more than 20 types of cigars available to the most discerning connoisseur including traditional premium flavor, cognac, and brandy flavored cigars. At the time of this review I was sitting in my favorite lounge recliner getting prepared for an exciting afternoon of watching NCAA Basketball on the television and decided to occupy my time by sampling a Casillas Double Corona. The cigar had a real nice medium flavor, with a smooth draw, and excellent finish. It is the perfect afternoon or evening cigar, an exemplary tribute to what a cigar should be. When I checked my credit card statement to see what I paid for this Double Corona, I was reminded of how great a bargain this brand was at an average stick price of less than $4.00, when you buy a full box of 25. Even better, if you want to sample a number of different sizes within the line, without having to buy full boxes, the good folks at Casillas will sell you indiviudal cigars in lots of 2 each or their popular bundle pack of 6 each. If you are looking for a complete line of flavored, or non-flavored, medium to full bodied smokes that utilize the freshest tobacco ingredients, we certainly encourage you to give our good friends from Casillas Cigars a shot.

Comments:
I often save my strong cigars for the weekend and opt for a mild cigar during the week. Many people make the mistake of assuming that they sacrifice flavor when opting for a milder brand of cigars. This is definitely not the case with the Riella line of cigars. I had the privilege of sampling a Corona sized cigar (pictured above) from Riella recently while watching a Monday Night Football game and was very satisfied with the flavor, burn, and draw. The Riella brand of cigars is manufactured in Honduras at the Nestor Placencia factory and is best described as a medium bodied cigar with a core of spiciness. Many Honduran brands, including Riella, have a very distinctive flavor and are very consistent from one cigar to the next. Riella also prides itself on offering factory direct service and prices and has become the model for all internet business from Latin America. In fact, they deliver directly from the factory to the customer's home or office within 48 hours of placing the order, ensuring that you will receive the freshest possible product. Riella also is available in Robusto and Double Corona sizes. Tamboril Sumatra Torpedo

Tamboril
Comments:
When I walked into my local tobacconist shop, I wanted to try a different brand and could not help but notice a well merchandised section of the humidor devoted exclusively to Tamboril Cigars. In fact, I was quite impressed with the variety of brands within the entire Tamboril line (they even have a relatively new brand devoted to golf enthusiasts called Fore that comes packaged in a clear, shatterproof plastic tube with a golf ball) and finally settled on a Sumatra torpedo. Quite a bit larger than your average torpedo or belicoso, the Tamboril torpedo had a very nice, smooth flavor combined with a great draw that lasts a good hour. Tamboril Cigars are manufactured in the Dominican Republic using excellent, long filler leaves that are sprayed with a cocoa solution and fermented for great taste. Tamboril's can be enjoyed by anybody, but are designed for the serious cigar smoker, As if this were not enough , the company sponsors numerous events throughout the country featuring the beautiful Tamboril Girls and they own a smoking lounge inside The Park Restaurant at the Lombardy Hotel in New York City. Thompson Dominican Selectas
Comments:
Whenever I play a round of golf I look for a cigar that tastes good, lasts a long time, and will not impair my game or judgment. Fortunately, the Thompson Dominican Selectas Churchill does all three. This is not your typical Churchill...afterall, the Thompson Dominican Selectas measures in at 7-1/2 inches with a 50 ring gauge and comes packaged in a handsome wooden box. Manufactured in the Dominican Republic using Cuban-seed tobacco under the careful and meticulous guidance of Alfredo Bayo, this cigar was very well constructed and had a nice medium-bodied flavor to it. As if this weren't enough of an incentive to get the average aficionado to try one of these beauties, a box of 25 can be purchased for under $50.00!! At this price, it's worth buying a couple of boxes and stocking up for the busy golf season. Furthermore, these cigars are manufactured and private labeled for Thompson and Company, one of the most respected names in mail order fulfillment since 1915. Flor De Selva

Comments:
Preparing for the Flor de Selva review was a lot like reading the newspapers the week before Super Bowl XXXII between the Packers and Broncos. The Broncos had a great team but the experts decided they would be two touchdown underdogs. Well, you know what the final score was. The same thing happened with Flor de Selva, Europe's Top-Rated Honduran Cigar. The editors of European Cigar Journal tested the Flor de Selva against the likes of more popular brands including Cohiba, Bolivar, Dunhill, Partagas and others and you know what...the Flor de Selva received the highest rating, right up there with some of its Cuban counterparts. Flor de Selva is now available in the United States--in fact, they are being distributed by the good folks from Bull's Eye...the same people who bring you the best-selling line of 44 Magnum and Silver Bullet Cigar Cutters. I had the pleasure of sampling a Corona, which had an excellent draw and a nice, medium bodied flavor that smoked consistent right up until the very end. Flor de Selva is also available in Churchill, Panatella, Fino, Robusto, and Double Corona sizes. For more information on where you can purchase these great tasting cigars, please contact Bull's Eye Cigar Cutters & Fine Cigars.

Cigar d O!

Cigar de O'
Comments:
As a veteran cigar smoker for several years, long before the advent of the cigar craze and escalating prices, it really hit home when I came across a message from the manufacturers of Cigar de O': "Tired of paying $7 for a $2 cigar?...so were we." In fact, after smoking and enjoying one of their fine cigars, I handed one to a close associate of mine (without any reference to cost) who shared the same opinion as me--this was a great tasting cigar. Cigar de O' produces two different cigars; one from Honduras and one from the Dominican Republic. Both are available in boxes of 25; the Honduran cigars are also available in convenient 3-pack samplers. The other thing I like about this brand is that the proprietors are also capable of private labeling their cigars for special events or parties. When you've smoked just about every possible cigar on the market, including Cubans, as I have it's kind of nice to hand a friend a gift bearing their name or company logo. At this point in time, you might be a little skeptical and wondering to yourself, if these cigars are so good, how come the price is so low?...That's because owner Mike O'Hearn and his partners are long time smokers, themselves, and are in the business for fun as opposed to for the money.

Comments:
There is nothing I enjoy more with a fine cigar than an outstanding cup of coffee. Fortunately, I came across the fine products manufactured by the Honduras Cigar & Coffee Company. HC & C manufactures and distributes their own line of cigars under the Don Carlos, Don Quixote, Havana Clase, and Galante Clase labels and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I had an opportunity to sample a Don Carlos Pyramid and a Havana Clase Churchill and enjoyed both cigars immensely. The Don Carlos had a nice mild, smooth draw and flavor to it, while the Havana Clase had a more full-bodied flavor to it and burned evenly throughout. Best of all, HC & C also markets a line of gourmet and premium coffee that is grown in the nearby mountains of Western Honduras. If you are a cigar and coffee connoisseur, as I am, and want a truly terrific product, I encourage you to visit the good folks at Honduras Cigar & Coffee...they have been featured in Cigar Monthly Magazine and invite you to join their Cigar of the Month Club.

Comments:
Without question, one of the most sought after cigars in the entire world these days is the OpusX. Think I'm kidding? Good luck finding one of these beauties...and if you do, be prepared to pay mucho dinero. Aside from price, these are extremely well constructed cigars that smoke real smooth throughout. My personal favorite within the OpusX line is the Reserva D'Chateau, a Churchill sized cigar that measures in at 7" with a ring gauge of 48. What I like best about the OpusX is the fact it is the perfect cigar for any time of day. Unlike some stronger Cuban cigars that are best smoked after a heavy meal, the OpusX can be consumed during lunch time, in the evening, or whenever you care to light up this ultra-premium cigar. Each cigar is individually wrapped in cellophane and is packaged in a very handsome wooden box. The only downside for the true cigar aficionado is that because of the limited supply and popularity of the entire OpusX line, you'll never have the opportunity to purchase an entire box (unless you happen to be named Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Scwarzenneger). Most retailers limit sales of the line to 2-3 cigars per customer but, in spite of this, the OpusX is a fabulous smoke and we invite you to visit our good friends at JC Newman & Company if you would like to learn more about this and other fine products.

Comments:
One of my favorite evening activities--in addition to watching ESPN Sportscenter--is strolling around the neighborhood smoking a fine cigar. By the time I had finished enjoying one of the Entrepreneur Robusto's, I had to double check my watch to make sure it wasn't running fast. It was hard to believe--and unfortunate--that time went by so quickly as I truly enjoyed this premium, mild cigar. Ideal for starters, the Entreprenuer line of cigars had a smooth taste, exquisite aroma, and a clean aftertaste. Its blend of Cibao-grown (the same area within the Dominican Republic where other leading manufacturers such as Arturo Fuente and General Cigar get their tobacco from) Piloto Cubano and Dominican Olor seeds can also be very entertaining to the most demanding cigar connoisseur. Entreprenuer is available in 5 different sizes, including Churchill, Grand Corona, Lonsdale, Toro, Corona, and Robusto. Comments:
It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Dominican Republic is putting out some of the finest--if not the finest--cigars on the market. Although overshadowed by the more familiar Fuente line of cigars, my good friends at Tenorio recently sent over several cigars and challenged me to take a blind taste test against ANY cigar out there. The blend of Cuban seed that is in all Tenorio cigars was very evident throughout the long lasting smoke and the cigars had a very pleasant aroma and burned evenly. Available in 5 different sizes--Churchill, Extra Corona, Corona, Robusto, and Panatela--Tenorio cigars are packed in hand made cedar boxes and come with or without individual cellophane. Tenorio currently has 78 employees working in its factory producing their line of cigars exclusively; in addition, they have the capacity of producing more than 300,000 cigars per month--which means they have plenty of product available and aggressive pricing to match. Everybody on our taste panel agreed this is an excellent cigar. For additional information on purchasing these fine cigars, you may contact the parent company, TABASA, at (809) 540-9222 or (809) 540-9220; they can also be reached by e-mail at: balcacer.r@codetel.net.do

Comments:
It's not an easy task for a non-Cuban cigar boasting the prestigious Monte Cristo name to pass the discriminating taste test I put all cigars through....however, this new brand that recently came to market did just that. Sold exclusively in Mexico until now, this surprisingly smooth and aromatic cigar is made from a blend of three tobaccos tracing back to their Mayan heritage, with the best Sumatran wrapper. The Lonsdale I thoroughly enjoyed measured in with a 42" ring size...what is real nice is the fact that each cigar comes sealed within a glass tube--in order to maintain maximum freshness--and then is individually packaged within a cardboard box. Suggested retail, including shipping and handling, for a box of 25 is only $175.00. Comparable to the very finest Cuban cigars, this Monte Cristo will delight the palate of the most discerning cigar connoiseur who is lucky enough to find one. Mayorga Cigar

Comments:
Having surfed the web as often as I do and noticing one of the hottest new brands on the market, I just had to see for myself why there was so much hype for Mayorga cigars....Available in 3 different sizes, I sampled their robusto. Nice label, nice construction, and nice, even-burning ash....but what blew me away was the fact this cigar tasted remarkably similar to the OpusX I smoked the evening before (but at a lower cost). The Mayorga begins with a mild draw and finishes with a robust bouquet of spices. The Mayorga is a choice blend of Nicaraguan binder and filler grown from select Cuban seed bound by Indonesian wrapper grown from Sumatra seed...Now I understand why all the hype...Mayorga is available nationwide from the good and reliable people at Green Mountain Unlimited. In fact, they are looking for distributors in all states and regions and can be reached at 888-MAYORGA or you can visit them on the web. They even received a nice write up in the Summer, 1997 issue of Smoke Magazine!!

Brand:
Don Fife
Comments:
I was introduced to the Don Fife brand of cigars at the nationally trade marked "The Cigar ShmoozeTM" business/ social event in Florida last fall. Available in several sizes and packaged in elegant cedar boxes of 25, I had the privilege of lighting up a Don Fife Churchill. Measuring in at 7 inches with a ring gauge of 48, this mild-to-medium bodied cigar had a nice creamy flavor to it, while the solid construction contributed to a smooth, easy draw. Most agreed it is perfect as an everyday afternoon or after-dinner cigar and the price can't be beat!!...For more information on the Don Fife brand of cigars, you can contact Boutique Cigars & Accessories Worldwide, Inc. at 1-888-CIGAR-10. Best of all, they have plenty of product in stock and all orders are filled the very next day.

Brand:
Romeo Y Julieta
Comments:
It is with great pleasure that we inaugurate the CigarFriendly.com review with one of the finest, most consistent Cuban cigars on the market. A Top 5 Cigar on any aficionado's wish list. Available in "loose" units or, preferably packaged in aluminum tubes. Perfect with a late afternoon cocktail (especially Grand Marnier) or as an after dinner cigar, the Romeo Y Julieta Churchill is a smooth, easy-drawing cigar that is full flavored yet surprisingly mild. It has enough of the rich spicy flavor that Cuban cigars are noted for.

Hoyo de Monterrey
Brand:
Hoyo de Monterrey
Comments:
If the Rose Bowl is considered the grand daddy of all college football bowl games, then the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona might be considered the grand daddy of all cigars. In fact, this cigar received the highest rating ever by Cigar Aficionado magazine a few years back. What was particularly interesting to note during our sampling was the fact this cigar was available in a choice of light or dark wrapper. Given that our tastes tend to be more sophisticated, we chose the darker shade and boy...we were not disappointed at all. The cigar--which can easily take more than an hour to finish--had a very consistent draw and complex flavor characteristics that seemed to changed constantly throughout. There was a pleasant aroma that also accompanied the cigar. A box of these cigars can easily fetch $600.00 or more on the streets of the United States (of course, those fortunate enough to be able to travel legally to Cuba can find these same cigars, when in stock, for $154.00 US--price as of January, 1998). This is a very classy cigar--even the label is a piece of art--that most definitely is one of the top 2 or 3 cigars in the entire world.

Brand:
Montecristo #2
Comments:
In the movie, "Crimson Tide," Gene Hackman offers Denzel Washington a cigar and, after noticing that he finds the cigar to be a bit powerful, replies: "First time smoking a cigar....well, don't get used to these--they'll end up costing you more than drugs." Not too far from the truth...if you can find a box of these excellent cigars in the U.S., it will set you back about $300-350. As for the cigar itself, a top 5 in itself. This torpedo shaped figurado is a full flavored yet smooth cigar that has a nice peppery flavor to it. It will last a good 45 minutes or so and should be smoked after dinner, perhaps with a good glass of 40-year port (personally, W & J Graham's is my favorite.) Much stronger than the Romeo y Julietta Churchill and yet it will not leave your head in a cloudy state of mind. If you can ever find any of these, run to your nearest ATM and make the purchase..you won't regret it.

Brand:
Bolivar #1 Tubos
Comments:
When asked what their favorite Cuban brand is, most aficionados will tell you Cohiba, Romeo y Julietta, Montecristo, Hoyo de Monterrey, etc. Although seldom mentioned as their first choice-- except by those in the know--Bolivar is one of the most sought after, hard to find Cubans on the market. Go to any foreign country, including Cuba, and you will be lucky to find a box of these lying on your tobacconists' shelf. Although the Bolivar Bellicoso Fino and Royal Corona are more popular, I had the privilege of lighting up a Bolivar #1. What flavor, and what a companion to, say, a Montecristo #2. This cigar is packed with a lot of "earthy" flavors and a touch of chocolate. Quite a bit smaller in size than a Churchill or Double Corona, the cigar is well worth the investment and you will not be disappointed. If you ever find a box of these in your travels...do not hesitate; buy the box!!!

Brand:
Virtual Cuban Cigars
Comments:
Having run out of Cuban Cigars (not to mention money) to review, I decided to try the next best thing...Virtual Cuban Cigars. Keep in mind, this was no easy task. I likened the process of reviewing a cigar on the footsteps of a Romeo y Julieta Churchill, Montecristo #2, and Bolivar Tubo to having to play center field for the New York Yankees following DiMaggio and Mantle. Well...the Virtual Cuban Cigars did a better job than Bobby Murcer did by responding to the challenge and then some. Available in assorted sizes, my personal favorites were the Churchill and Corona. A bit sweeter than the genuine habanos, Virtual Cuban Cigars nevertheless were packed with flavor and were very consistent. Definitely worth a try...they definitely will not burn a hole in your wallet. But don't take my word for it; for more information, you can check out their site at http://www.vcigar.com.
